Medications We Use

Disclaimer – This is a list of medications that have worked well for us with our dogs. We are not veterinarians and are not recommending anyone to use these medications. If you use this information you are doing so at your own risk.

Generic namePyrantel Pamoate by Vedco
Brand name (sold as) – Strongid T
Function – Used as a deworming agent. Removes hookworms (all species) and roundworms (Parascaris equorum, aka ascarids in humans) in dogs and puppies, and pinworms in humans.
Form – Liquid oral.
Dosage – Indicated on the bottle. Concentration is 50 mg per ml of Pyrantel Pamoate. 3 mg Pyrantel base per pound of body weight (6 mL per 100 lb body weight).
3mg X 90lb dog = 270mg
270mg / 50mg per ml = 5.4ml

  • With food: Mix appropriate dosage with a small portion of palatable food like yogurt. Often puppies and dogs will lick it up directly as it tastes sweet. Fasting of animals prior to or following treatment is not required.
  • Stomach Tube for animals that will not eat: Mix appropriate dosage in the desired quantity of water. Administer immediately after mixing. Do not store diluted suspension.

Schedule – For puppies initiate treatment at 2 weeks, repeat at 4, 6, and 8 weeks of age. For a puppy at increased risk, also treat at 10 and 12 weeks, and then monthly until the puppy is 6 months old. Thereafter, Worm adults at least twice a year. Two applications per treatment (14 days apart) or use a heartworm preventive medication that is also effective against hookworms and roundworms.

Generic name – Ivermectin
Brand name (sold as) – Ivomec
Function – Heartworm prevention.
Works on – Heartworm, roundworms, lungworms, grubs, lice and mange mites.
Form – Liquid subcutaneous injection.
Dosage – 1ml/110lb also 1/10cc(ml) per 10lb.

Generic name – Fenbendazole
Brand name (sold as) – Panacur
Function – A broad spetrum anthelmintic used against gastrointestinal parasites.
Works on – roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, the taenia species of tapeworms,
pinworms, aelurostrongylus, paragonimiasis, strongyles and strongyloides.
Form – Tablet/bolus.
Dosage – 50mg / kg or 22.7 mg/lb.

Generic name – Sulfadimethoxine 12 1/2% Solution
Brand name (sold as) – Albon
Function – Antibiotic used as coccidia treatment.
Works on – Coccidia.
Form – Liquid oral.
Dosage – Mix down to %5 and give 1 teaspoonful of this %5 oral Suspension mixture per 10 lb of
body weight (25 mg/lb or 55 mg/kg) as an initial dose, followed by ½ teaspoonful per 10 lb of
body weight (12.5 mg/lb or 27.5 mg/kg) every 24 hours thereafter. Recommended to give this
treatment for a total of 10 days.

Generic name – Metronidazole 250mg per tablet
Brand name (sold as) – Fish Zole
Function – Antibiotic used as Giardia treatment.
Works on – Giardia.
Form – Tablet oral.
Dosage – Adult dogs 25lb – One 250mg tablet twice a day for 5 days.
Puppies 8-12lb – one half (1/2) a 250mg tablet twice a day for 5 days.

Brand name (sold as) – Nobivac Puppy-DPV
Function – Distemper Parvovirus 2-way vaccine.
Works on – Distemper Parvovirus.
Form – Liquid subcutaneous injection.
Dosage – Once at 6 weeks, 8 weeks and 12 weeks.
